DescriptionMichael Bennett & Sons was awarded the contract for the construction of the CAT Scan and Cardiac Unit at Wexford General Hospital in June 2000. Construction works commenced shortly afterward and the contract was further extended during the progress of the works. Any contract carrying the tag “hospital” or “health” will present particular challenges in procurement and the CAT Scan and Cardiac Unit was no exception. The building was a "cast in-situ" concrete frame, clad in block-work cavity walls, with finishes to match the existing heavily serviced building. This required not only the provision of electrical and mechanical services, but also specialist services such as medical gases, air conditioning and the use of special-purpose rendering materials for the containment of harmful x-rays. The project consisted of a total floor area of approximately 6,000 square feet sub-divided over three floor levels. Brian O’Connell and Associates set out a requirement for a high level of finish and workmanship and this was achieved to the satisfaction of both architect and client.
