2004: St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny

Description

Situated on Kilkenny's Freshford Road, St. Luke’s Hospital is a modern acute facility providing a range of local and regional services, including medical, general surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics. The hospital had benefited from significant re-development with improvements in patient accommodation and new units established for Hepatology, CAT Scan, Cardiac Investigation, Coronary Care, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Medical Assessment. The existing parking space was unable to accommodate the increased activity at the hospital and this prompted the South-Eastern Health Board to develop a new car park. As the main contractor, Niall Barry & Co carried out the civils work for this development including excavation, kerbing, footpaths, drainage, lighting and line-marking. The surfacing itself was sub-contracted to Bennett Tarmacadam. This included 40mm of 20mm dense base course and 35mm of 10mm dense wearing course. The project involved a surface area of 9,250 square metres and was completed in January 2004. The above photos were taken during exceptionally heavy rainfall two days after completion. They clearly illustrate the surface drainage requirement, always a challenging aspect of large car park developments.
